The Ultimate Sardinia Self-Drive Itinerary
There are so many reasons why we love holidays in Sardinia.
We love the sea, which is even clearer than the Caribbean, the fragrant countryside and beautiful landscapes, and the crisp sound of the Sardinian dialect, which is every bit as distinctive as the local flatbread.
We love visiting Sardinia not just in summer, but at any time of year — it is exceptionally beautiful in every season.
Few people have yet discovered all that Sardinia has to offer, which is why we have put together this itinerary.
For us, it represents the ultimate self-drive holiday in Sardinia, staying at some of our favourite hotels.
We think it is the best possible way to explore this charming island.
Day 1 – Arrive in Olbia and Discover Oliena
Fly into Olbia and drive inland to the east of Sardinia towards the little village of Oliena.
This charming location is surrounded by hills, gorges and lakes — a landscape reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands, but with much better weather.
Here you will arrive at Su Gologone Hotel.
It is not known as an “experience” hotel for nothing.
There are countless relaxing and memorable experiences to enjoy, from exploring the hotel’s art collection and wine tasting to outdoor cinema evenings and adventures through the surrounding landscapes.
The owners hope that every guest leaves carrying a little piece of Sardinia through unforgettable memories.
Meals here will become one of the highlights of your holiday.
Sardinian cuisine reflects a beautifully simple approach to life through local cheeses, spit-roasted meats, pane carasau, handmade pasta, olive oil and distinctive wines.
At Su Gologone, enjoy dishes such as maccarones de busa (handmade bucatini), culurgiones (ravioli filled with local ricotta), porceddu allo spiedo (spit-roasted suckling piglet), and seadas al miele (honey fritters).
Day 2 – Explore Local Flavours and Gardens
Make time to wander through the herb gardens.
The views become especially beautiful in the evening as the sun disappears behind the mountains.
Each plant is labelled in Italian, Sardinian and Latin.
Spend time discovering the region through local food and drink tastings focused on Sardinian wines, olive oil, cheeses and prosciutto.
With three restaurants available at the hotel, mealtimes continue to be a daily highlight.
Day 3 – Adventure Through Sardinia
Explore the surrounding area on foot or by bike, following ancient shepherds’ paths through forests of holm oak and scenic clearings.
Visit archaeological sites or head to Sardinia’s pristine white beaches and crystal-clear sea.
For those seeking adventure, Land Rover tours and quad bike excursions offer another way to experience landscapes framed by Mediterranean scrub, limestone rock formations and wildflowers.
Day 4 – Slow Down and Enjoy Su Gologone
Spend the day immersing yourself in the tranquil atmosphere of this remarkable hotel.
Relax in the Tex Willer Garden among hammocks and artistic details.
Although Sardinia’s beaches are nearby, the 25-metre swimming pool fed exclusively by Su Gologone spring water offers an excellent alternative.
Later, enjoy an aperitif at the Magico Tablao terrace with Sardinian artichoke and wild cardoon antipasti overlooking the dramatic scenery of Supramonte.
Choose from an impressive selection of Sardinian grappas and local herb and berry liqueurs.
In the evening, visit the hotel’s “Terrace of Dreams” and admire Mount Corrasi.
During certain evenings between May and September, amateur astronomers host stargazing experiences using telescopes and video cameras.
Day 5 – Travel to Alghero
Drive approximately two hours to Villa Mosca, your base for the next three nights.
Located close to Alghero, this destination blends Italian charm with strong Catalan influence.
Enjoy a romantic sunset aperitif on the terrace overlooking the city.
Dinner here highlights creative cuisine inspired by local traditions.
Day 6 – Visit Neptune’s Grotto
One of Alghero’s most popular excursions is Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune’s Grotto).
Reach it by boat to enjoy spectacular coastal scenery around Porto Conte and Capo Caccia.
Alternatively, travel by road and descend the famous 656 Escala del Cabirol steps carved into the cliff.
This extraordinary cave is often one of the highlights of a Sardinian holiday.
For underwater explorers, snorkelling opportunities include shipwrecks near Cagliari and the submerged Nereo Cave.
Day 7 – Beaches and Historic Alghero
Sardinia’s beaches are famous for fine white sand and calm emerald waters.
One favourite is Mugoni Beach along Porto Conte’s eastern road.
Protected by surrounding pine forests, it is ideal for relaxing, boating or watching windsurfers.
For culture and history, explore Alghero’s religious landmarks including:
- Cathedral of St Mary the Immaculate (Duomo di Alghero)
- Church of San Francesco
- Church of San Michele
Day 8 – Discover Costa Smeralda
Drive to Gallura in north-eastern Sardinia.
Here, the beautiful bays of Costa Smeralda meet crystal-clear waters.
Stay at Relais Villa Del Golfo and enjoy Mediterranean architecture that blends modern design with Sardinian tradition.
Dinner at Mira Luna Restaurant is highly recommended for its Mediterranean cuisine and scenic setting.
Day 9 – Cooking and Wine Experiences
Breakfast highlights exceptional local produce.
Later, join your hosts for a cooking experience at the farmhouse or choose a wine tasting at the Art Boutique of Villa del Golfo.
Sample three varieties of Vermentino accompanied by light dishes.
For dinner, visit the nearby La Colti farmhouse restaurant for authentic Gallura cuisine.
Day 10 – Relaxation and Luxury
Begin the day with yoga at the Oasi of Luna terrace overlooking the sea.
Treat yourself to natural wellness experiences at the Garden of Senses.
Guests can also rent the hotel’s private sailing yacht for unforgettable excursions through the archipelago or an elegant evening dinner on emerald waters.
A truly luxurious way to end your Sardinian adventure.
Day 11 – Return to Olbia
Return to Olbia for your flight home.
