Rome’s Timeless Heritage
Rome is one of the most remarkable cities in the world, where more than two millennia of history stand side by side with modern life. The Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Pantheon recall the power of the empire, while the Vatican showcases the city’s religious and artistic influence. Yet Rome is not a museum — it is a living, breathing capital where ancient walls and ruins form the backdrop to everyday life. Its sense of continuity, where past and present coexist, is what makes the Eternal City endlessly fascinating.
Life in the Heart of Italy
Beyond its monuments, Rome is defined by its atmosphere. Lively piazzas filled with fountains and cafés capture the city’s social spirit, while neighbourhoods like Trastevere reveal narrow cobbled streets, vibrant markets, and authentic Roman charm. The city’s museums, churches, and art galleries house treasures that span centuries, from Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary exhibitions. Rome is also a city of festivals, traditions, and daily rituals — an espresso at the bar, an evening passeggiata, or a moment of reflection in a sunlit square. These rhythms give Rome its enduring character.

Rome’s Wider Horizons
While the heart of Rome holds the world’s most famous landmarks, its surroundings reveal another layer of beauty. Just outside the city, Tivoli’s gardens and Hadrian’s Villa offer a glimpse of imperial luxury, while Ostia Antica tells the story of Rome’s ancient port. The nearby hills are dotted with towns like Frascati, famous for its wines, and Castel Gandolfo, the summer retreat of popes. Even the Tyrrhenian coast is within easy reach. Together, these escapes complement the grandeur of Rome itself, offering travellers variety and a fuller picture of central Italy.

Beginning in Milan, this sixteen-day rail journey moves through Italy's most storied cities and coastlines, trading the fashion arcades and gothic grandeur of the Duomo for the pastel harbour fronts of the Ligurian Riviera. Santa Margherita and Portofino offer their particular charm, cobbled and unhurried, before the clifftop villages of Cinque Terre appear along one of the Mediterranean's most dramatic stretches of coast. Florence follows, its Renaissance galleries and terracotta skyline demanding more than a single day, and Rome delivers the ancient city in full, from the Colosseum and the Vatican to the baroque theatre of the Trevi Fountain. Venice brings the journey north again, a city of canals and bridges navigated best on foot or by gondola, and Verona, often passed over for louder destinations, rewards the curious with its Roman amphitheatre, narrow medieval streets and the enduring pull of Shakespeare's most famous setting. The final leg returns to Milan for onward departure.
